Bad recruitment practices are leaving small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) struggling against the competition, according to one expert. Sir Digby Jones, the former director general of the Confederation of British Industry, said that improvements need to be made by bosses in small firms to take on better candidates and improve their hiring process. Speaking at the Work Wise UK Summit, Sir Digby said that staff recruitment is set to become increasingly difficult over the next few years as the "labour market becomes more mobile internationally". He added that employers must be prepared to face these challenges head-on or they will miss out and be "relegated from the top tier". UK Skills Envoy Sir Digby added that other working practices which need to be faced are environmental-based such as encouraging people not to drive to work, recycling and ensuring equipment is not left on standby. "Not only will there be improvements in productivity and competitiveness but also in the well being of staff which in turn impacts positively upon employee relations. This is not about working harder but more cleverly," he said. Work Wise UK is a five-year programme aimed at introducing smarter working practices such as flexible working, remote and mobile working and working from home.
