Beware 'irritating expressions'

Beware 'irritating expressions' Graduates preparing to go for an interview may want to bear in mind new research from Oxford University.

Researchers have put together a top ten list of the most irritating expressions used in everyday conversation.

The phrases "at the end of the day" and "fairly unique" were deemed the first and second most annoying, reports the Daily Telegraph.

"I personally" also features - a phrase which Radio 4 presenter John Humphreys described as the "linguistic equivalent of having chips with rice".

The phrases have been complied for a book called Damp Squid, named after the mistake of confusing a squid with a squib.

The book's author Jeremy Butterfield says expressions such as 24/7 and "synergy" are often coined as office lingo.

"We grow tired of anything that is repeated too often - an anecdote, a joke, a mannerism - and the same seems to happen with some language."
