Bonuses 'should be linked to green targets'

Bonuses 'should be linked to green targets' Company executives should be encouraged to go green by having their bonuses linked to environmental targets, a new survey has suggested.

Research by the Unite union discovered that some 83 per cent of respondents felt their office wasted energy and resources.

Additionally, 87 per cent believed unions should play a major part in developing measures that will reduce the negative impact of the workplace on the environment, which may interest eco-conscious graduates.

Commenting on the issue, Hilary Benn, secretary of state for the environment, food and rural affairs, said: "The commitment of industry to deal with climate change is growing in the UK.

"I believe that trade unions and their members have a vital role to play. Trade unionists can really help change to happen in the workplace as part of the move to a lower carbon economy."

Unite national officer Peter Skyte said: "no employer will make money from a dead planet."
