A new law is set to be introduced which will require businesses to give more time off to their staff. According to the current Working Time Regulations, employees are entitled to four weeks' paid holiday each year - which may or may not include bank holidays. The new legislation will raise entitlement to 5.6 weeks per year, which is equal to receiving four weeks plus the bank holidays. Tony Hyams-Parish, partner and head of employment at Rawlison Butler, explained that the law aims to place all employees "on a level playing field". "If employers fail to offer the increased holiday entitlement, employees can complain to the employment tribunals under the Working Time Regulations," he added. Recent research by Mercer HR Consulting indicated that holiday entitlement in EU countries varies by as much as 16 days, with UK workers falling into the bottom four on the number of days off given.
