Businesses will be considering their September recruitment strategies over the summer months, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC) has claimed. According to the group, the job market is "complex", but hiring trends were still healthy in many sectors – most notably the public sector. Commenting on the issue, Anne Fairweather, head of public policy at the REC, said: "Whether that [hiring] holds up across graduate placements is something that companies will be looking at over the summer period," "It's quite difficult to tell how things will develop now as traditionally people don't hire over the summer, but I think we will start to see in September/October the extent to which the economic uncertainty is starting to hit new recruits." However, a joint study conducted by the REC and consultancy firm KPMG indicated that the demand for permanent staff has fallen at its fastest rate since 2001.
