Companies need to do more to attract female workers, says expert Although many companies claim to have flexible working policies, one expert has suggested that some are still not doing enough.

Jan Peters, women's forum manager at the British Computer Society (BCS), said that there continue to be "barriers" preventing women from progressing within certain professions, including IT.

She suggested that "family responsibilities" can often conflict with work because some companies do not fully implement their flexible working policies.

These working systems can often come down to the way that line managers choose to implement them, Ms Peters argued.

"It is all very well trying to attract women to your company by advertising flexible working, but when it comes down to it, it isn't that easy and they make you feel uncomfortable," she remarked.

The BCS currently has 60,000 members in more than 100 countries around the world, however, figures produced in 2004 revealed that just 14 per cent were women.
