Employers need to offer career development to entice graduates

Employers planning to recruit graduates in the near future are being advised to think about helping them to develop their careers once they are in the workplace.

It seems that many employees are fed up with the lack of support given to them regarding their career path and this is putting some people off applying for jobs with certain companies.

The research comes from HR consultancy Blessingwhite, which says that only 30 per cent of employees asked felt the approach their employers had to career development is hitting the mark.

Tom Barry, UK managing director of BlessingWhite, said: "Many organisations are all too quick to blithely state that employees are their greatest asset.

"However, in our experience this often not reflected in the level of effort put into developing talent and retaining the best workers."

Some ways in which employers can retain current staff and entice graduates into applying for positions is by offering up training sessions - which 27 per cent of respondents said were helpful or very helpful.

More than a quarter of those asked said that they had found talking to career consultants vital in terms of development while 25 per cent thought mentoring schemes were helpful.
