Organisations which wish to attract graduates and retain employees may want to offer more opportunities for career development and training, a new study suggests. Research from the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) reveals that 51 per cent of companies admit they do not offer these programmes and incentives. Additionally, the data shows that 81 per cent of firms are experiencing difficulties recruiting, while 78 per cent have problems with retention. Jo Causon, director of marketing and corporate affairs at the CMI, said she believes the issues are linked. "[Staff] want employers to show commitment in the shape of ongoing professional development and if organisations are serious about retaining the best talent, they urgently need to meet these needs. Failure to so will, in the short-term, ensure the top talent leaves," she remarked. The findings of the CMI survey echo those of an Ernst & Young poll last month, which indicated that 44 per cent of graduates prioritise training when looking for a job.
