English graduates should look to the City

English graduates should look to the City An English degree could be a substantial advantage to graduates if they undertake a career in the financial sector, according to an ex-senior chartered accountant.

Dr Sullivan from Bangor's School of English is leading research into how an English degree could be directly applicable to the financial world as multi-million pound deals are often sealed using complicated systems of signs and metaphors, report the Western Mail.

She intends to persuade those in high finance positions to recognise the benefits of hiring arts graduates given that a "sophisticated manipulation of signs" occurs in both literature and high finance.

Commenting on the similarities, Dr Sullivan said: "Both disciplines are involved with the creative manipulation of abstract ideas, using analogies, moving spheres of reference, performing to an audience."

She went on to say that money is a "metaphor" and how English graduates would have the ability to "think in analogies" which is integral to the world of finance.

The Confederation of British Industry and PricewaterhouseCoopers recently reported that the last few months had seen the creation of new jobs in the financial sector, despite the consequences of the global credit crunch.
