Graduates and other employees who are eager to improve their earning potential should begin by researching how much they should be earning in their field, Merryn Somerset Webb writes in Money Week. Self-promotion is also an important part of asking for more money, she explains, as employers are more likely to acknowledge someone when they are reminded of their achievements. However, she advises people to "be objective" when deciding how much they are worth, rather than letting their own feelings guide them. Regarding how graduates should approach pay demands when they are first offered a job, Ms Webb says to "never take the first salary offered". "Try to bump it up a bit instead. The higher a base you start from, the faster your salary will rise. Start high and be argued down," she comments. Research from Office Angels last year suggested that a Wednesday afternoon was the best time to ask for more money, as managers would be more receptive in the middle of the week.
