New research has revealed that most people believe that the government should be responsible for closing the gender pay gap. A study of over 1,000 people commissioned by the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) discovered that some 88 per cent think it ought to be the government's job, with 94 per cent stating that men and women should be paid the same amount for the same job. Currently, the gender pay gap is 19 per cent in the civil service, and 17 per cent in the remainder of the economy. Mark Serwotka, PCS general secretary, said: "This poll, coming on International Women's Day, shows that the public know equal pay is still a problem and that it's the government's job to do something about it. "It is scandalous that the gender pay gap stands at 19 per cent in the civil service." He added that the government need to address the issue as "inequality is rife".
