Graduates to find their degrees in the vegetable aisle

Tesco is to help further education students get degrees by offering Open University (OU) courses on its clubcard scheme.

The innovative initiative will see shoppers who spend more than £100,000 at Tesco accrue enough points to pay for £4,000 worth of higher education at the distance learning institution.

Students would still be required to do all the associated work for the course but in theory, students could receive a degree at no cost.

Moreover, OU has stated that the scheme will make it more accessible to a larger group of potential students and enhance its reputation as an educational institution.

Professor Brenda Gourley, OU's vice chancellor, said: "This is an exciting and innovative partnership that is true to the university's founding mission - to be open to people, places, methods and ideas.

"The partnership allows the university to extend our reach to new students, who have the opportunity to gain access to our courses without incurring any debt."

Tesco has added to this by saying that the scheme will allow its customers to gain "valuable qualifications" that are extremely useful in today's competitive employment market.
