UK graduates should concentrate on improving their skills to compete with workers from abroad, according to the leader of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI). Speaking to university vice-chancellors, Richard Lambert said that the country must do more to raise the level of skills graduates have when they leave university, which in turn would help the UK remain competitive. "If businesses can't find the skills or work attitudes that they need in the national workplace, they can perfectly well recruit them elsewhere," he warned. Those looking for graduate pharmaceutical sales jobs and other positions may want to take Mr Lambert's advice into account. Meanwhile, shadow innovation, universities and skills secretary David Willets suggested that the skills gap may be partially addressed by collaborations forged between businesses and universities. Website Personnel Today recently suggested that a skills shortage is costing the country billions of pounds each year.
