Green-minded graduates eye environmentally friendly employers

Employers may be motivated to brush up on their green credentials after new research from Envirowise suggested that top graduates will choose their future place of work partly on the basis of companies' claims to environmentalism.

Almost half of the university students surveyed cited a future employer's environmental credentials as a key consideration when deciding where to target applications or accept an offer.

Although employers often enjoy the pick of the crop as a growing number of outstanding graduates look for work, the selection process cuts both ways.

"With such an army of graduates coming out of our region each year, the smartest businesses will be looking to attract and retain the very best," Envirowise's regional manager for eastern England, Kate Haigh, told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph.

Green measures may include "publishing a formal environmental policy on the company website" or "having a named employee who spearheads resource efficiency measures", she suggested.

Envirowise is a government agency which supports businesses aiming to green-up their working practices.

It believes that businesses can become more efficient and make themselves more attractive to potential employees by wearing their green credentials on their sleeve.
