Online retail 'not affecting recruitment'

Online retail 'not affecting recruitment' High street retail is not yet being replaced by the trend for online shopping, it has been claimed.

According to online market intelligence firm Hitwise, Monday (December 8th) was the busiest online shopping day this year, with sales volumes up 18 per cent.

However, director at Oyster Retail Recruitment Louise Wright told Recruiter that online shopping would supplement the high street, rather than replace it completely.

Ms Wright notes that companies on the high street are making every effort to make their business work as they want to be "seen to be giving 150 per cent".

Steve Walters, director at Blue Monday, pointed out that many consumers still want the experience of high street shopping, which is good news for the retail recruitment sector

"You still need that touch, feel, smell which you can’t create online. You wouldn’t have the new Westfield shopping centre open in London if that was the case," he said.
