Internet 'can be both friend and foe' for recruitment

The internet has the potential to work both for and against those involved in the recruitment process, it has been suggested.

An article in People Management magazine points out that companies may use social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace to research candidates and even to communicate with recruits directly.

However, some companies have policies against using these sites during the hiring process, as they believe the information is personal and irrelevant.

Vanessa Robinson, Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development adviser, said: "While you can't stop people searching the internet for information on somebody, employers should be careful that they are basing recruitment decisions on relevant criteria for the job."

Meanwhile, Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, remarked that the general trend towards advertising and responding to jobs online makes recruitment "much more accessible".

Some 20 per cent of firms use social networking sites to look up information on candidates, according to Joslin Rowe.
