Salaries in London rose during July amid a buoyant labour market, new research indicates. The Halifax Financial Services London Labour Market Report barometer recorded an all-time high of 63 for the month, up from 61.3 in June. These latest figures reflect the fourth consecutive year-on-year rise for the barometer, as demand for permanent staff also increased at the second-highest rate for the past three years. Regarding pay, 44 per cent of employers said they increased salaries for their permanent staff last month. Tim Crawford, group economist at Halifax Financial Services, commented: "The London labour market has strengthened over the past few months and there was a clear increase in job placements during July. "Salary levels also rose over the month as firms paid more to attract qualified staff in the capital." A recent article in the Guardian suggested that high-paying graduate salaries were helping women narrow the gender pay gap.
