More maths and science graduates are needed to fill teaching vacancies, it has been claimed. The Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA) is intending to launch a campaign to attract more maths and science into teaching, after it found that many graduates do not get to use their specific skills. According to the group, some 50 per cent of recent science and maths graduates feel they don't get the opportunity to apply their skills in their new job, reports the Independent. John Connolly, head of recruitment at TDA, said many jobs just require a degree of any discipline which can result in such graduates working in a "generic office job sitting in front of a computer screen and going to meetings". The TDA requires around 6,000 science and maths teachers for the coming school year. "Teaching is a job where you will use the knowledge you spent all those years getting," says Connolly.
