Postgrad study 'must be supported'

Postgrad study 'must be supported' The government has been called on to offer more financial support to postgraduate students.

According to the National Union of Students (NUS), the current loan system which funds undergraduates should be extended to those who go on to further studies.

Aaron Porter, vice-president for higher education at the NUS, told the BBC's Moneybox programme: "The government, if it claims that postgraduate study is important, and it does, needs to ensure a fairer funding system to support students."

Currently, postgraduate students must access funding through grant or career development loans, with the latter having commercial rates of interest.

However, some big companies are now offering new employees assistance to manage their student debt.

The Times recently reported that the Confederation of British Industry has found "a number of firms" helping those who in graduate jobs with their remaining tuition fees.
