The Monster Employment Index has shown a decline for the first time in three months. The index fell by eight points between December and January, with online recruitment activity and the related employment opportunities declining across most of the sectors overseen by the monthly study. Online recruitment in the sales sector dipped by six index points, with the media sector declining by 16 points and IT falling by three. However, experts from Monster have said that employers and recruits do not need to fret over the decline as it was expected to occur in January. In fact, they claim that the decline in 2007 is far less significant than in 2006 and that year-on-year growth has left the index around 20 points higher than 12 months ago. Andy Townsend, from Monster, said: "Not surprisingly, online job demand eased across most industry sectors due to reduced recruitment activity following the Christmas and New Year break. "Despite the seasonal slowdown measured across most occupations by the index in January, all nine categories are showing strong year-on-year growth and significant improvement compared to January 2006." The Monster Employment Index is designed to give a broad overview of the employment sector and online recruitment demand in the UK, giving employers and employees the opportunity to assess the job market.
