Employment vacancies in the UK increased during the second quarter of 2007, according to new government figures. During the period from April to June, the Office for National Statistics reported that there were 653,800 vacancies - a rise of 14,900 over the first three months of the year. The finance and business sectors were shown to have experienced the largest increase, but officials confirmed that most industries had seen a rise. At the same time, unemployment fell to 5.4 per cent from 5.6 per cent during the previous quarter, which reflects a decrease of 45,000 jobless individuals in Britain. "This is a very strong set of figures. Employment is at near-record levels and unemployment is down again, but we are determined to do more," said employment minister Caroline Flint. According to recent research by the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development and KPMG, 86 per cent of organisations are planning recruitment activities this summer.
