Small firms 'too slow to make job offers'

Small firms who are hiring staff are not getting the best candidates because of the length of time it takes them to make a job offer following an interview.

According to an HR consultant, businesses need to speed up their recruitment processes or risk losing out on graduates and other qualified staff because of delays.

Alan Rommel, public sector director at Parity Resources, said that small and medium-sized firms are "wasting valuable time and resources" by having to repeat the entire recruitment process if a candidate fails to accept a job offer.

He added that this was often because bosses were too slow when it comes to making a decision, leaving many graduate candidates free to accept other positions.

"Keeping skilled applicants waiting on your decision is unfair on the individual and subsequently detrimental to your business.

"If skills go elsewhere in a market that is already tipped in favour of the skilled worker, the business will not be able to function at its optimum level," he said.

One way in which employers can speed up the process of offering media sales jobs or pharmaceutical sales jobs is by registering with an online recruitment agency.

Mr Rommel also recommends that bosses try to dramatically cut the number of time it takes to respond after an interview to "improve the recruitment experience for the candidate".
