SNP calls for end to student debt burden

An SNP spokesperson has today called for an end to the burden of student loans for Scottish graduates after it was revealed that the amount they are paying back has nearly doubled in five years.

SNP education spokesperson Fiona Hyslop said figures published by the SNP showed that in 2006, the maximum student loan debt was nearly £30,000.

This is leaving thousands of graduates struggling to pay up and having to apply for jobs as soon as they leave university in a bid to start paying back what they owe.

Ms Hyslop said: "These figures confirm that student debt is a serious problem in Scotland.

"With students now reaching a maximum debt of nearly £30,000 and the average student graduating with around £12,000 debt, this is further evidence that it's time for a complete overhaul of the system."

Meanwhile, universities across the country are calling for more to be done to increase staffing levels and reduce the need to "cram" students in to classes.

According to the University and College Union, the number of students per teacher is on the rise which it says could potentially have a negative effect on both higher education and the welfare of professors.
