Social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace are increasingly being used by employers to research candidates, it has been claimed. Website onrec.com said that although using such sites should be approached with caution, many employers view it as another method for matching applicants with vacancies, as they allow insight into a jobseeker's personality. "Using social networking sites should be taken with a pinch of salt and not be used as the sole method for recruitment," the site states. "On the other hand, it can however be a great way for employers to find and match candidates to their vacancies and build their talent pool." It advises that graduates who have a profile listed online should take some precautions, which include avoiding mentions any criminal offences or stories about being fired from previous jobs. Swear words, silly pictures and descriptions of drunken antics are also ill-advised, it adds. A recent poll by Joslin Rowe indicated that 20 per cent of employers admit using social networking sites to search for information on candidates.
