Legislation should be in place that would allow UK employees to take time off work for training purposes, it has been claimed. According to the World of Learning's senior conference and marketing manager Alison Church, it is more important than ever that professional development is encouraged, given the current economic climate. "The UK's economy is based on the skills of the people that work within it, so without doubt the more educated and better trained staff are, the more likely they are to make a valuable contribution to their companies," she said. She added that such investment in staff can significantly improve performance and motivation. Research conducted by the World of Learning suggests that almost seven in ten learning and development experts would welcome new legislation which would entitle workers to additional time off for training. In June, Skills secretary John Denham said that up to 300,000 workers would be allowed paid leave from work for development purposes by 2010.
