UK labour market 'in good shape'

The employment market in the UK is still maintaining its buoyancy, according to the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), which could be good news for those seeking graduate jobs.

Tom Hadley, REC director of external relations, said that the organisation is feeling positive about the outlook for the new year, despite last year's predictions that the slowing economy could have an effect on employment.

Media reports which have warned of a slowdown in employment may simply be "scare stories", he explained.

"So far, the labour market remains in good shape despite the claims in some quarters of a job creation slow-down," Mr Hadley remarked.

He went on to forecast that the changing demographic of the workforce over the next decade will "have a massive impact" on several sectors of the UK economy.

Mr Hadley's comments follow those of Brendan Barber, general secretary of the Trades Union Congress, who recently told members that UK employment is at a record level.
