Graduates should ensure they take full advantage of work experience opportunities while they are studying, an expert has said. According to the Association of Graduate Careers Advisory Services, (AGCAS) placements and internships should be pursued by graduated in order to optimise their employment potential. Margaret Dane, chief executive of AGCAS, said that such opportunities will "offer students chances to gain experience, test themselves in different employment contexts and do some thinking about their own aspirations and values". ClickAJob chief executive Yngve Traberg pointed out that those graduates who actively seek out work experience during their time at university will be at an advantage in terms of being noticed by recruiters. "Just having a degree is not enough to give you an edge. Employers need to know that there are skills behind the theory - and commitment behind the enthusiasm," he remarked. An application showing evidence of work experience will stand "heads and shoulders above" one without, Mr Traberg concluded.
