A new report by the Work Foundation has said that too many employers are not properly using the skills of their staff, including graduates. The survey, titled the Knowledge Workers and Knowledge Work report, found that 20 per cent of graduates are in "low knowledge content" jobs, meaning that companies are not fully utilising their recruits. Forty per cent of all employees have more skills than their jobs require and 65 per cent said that the primary characteristic of their organisations was "rule and policy bound", even though only five per cent perceived this as positive. Ian Brinkley, co-author of the report, said: "To keep job losses to a minimum, organisations should be taking full advantage of widespread opportunities to give people more responsibility, move away from rules and procedure-based workplace cultures, and re-organise work." Paul Speer, head of apprentice recruitment at BT recently told Personnel Today that employers should get involved with educational establishments in order to make sure future graduate employees have the necessary communication, networking and planning skills for the workplace.
