EU workers 'not affecting UK jobseekers'

EU workers 'not affecting UK jobseekers' Migrant workers from the EU are not having a detrimental affect on UK jobs, the business secretary has claimed.

Lord Mandelson pointed out that workers from overseas are simply taking up jobs that Britons typically leave vacant.

He added that a raft of employment opportunities have recently been created in the retail and hospitality sectors, noting that there are now 600,000 more British nationals employed than seven years ago.

Lord Mandelson addressed concerns that the government was not acting on its pledge of "British jobs for British workers" at the European scrutiny committee meeting this week.

"I think it's important to note at the outset that the nationals coming here from the original eight new accession countries are helping to fill gaps in our labour market our British nationals are either not available to fill or are unwilling to fill," he said.

It recently emerged that several top City law firms are offering graduates thousands of pounds to defer their start date.
