Ghana has laid out its plans to become a major player on the global sales outsourcing market over the coming years. At present, it is estimated that Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) operations, which include sales and customer service processes, generate some $45 million a year for the Ghanaian economy. However, the country's Ministry of Communications has now unveiled plans to increase this to around $70 million a year within the medium-term future, with the financial services sector in particular set to be wooed over the coming years. Alhassan Umar, executive secretary of the Ministry's Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) Secretariat, told the Ghana News Agency: "We hope to attract at least ten major BPO companies from Europe and the US to Ghana and we also want to get more local entities like banks and insurance companies, as well as companies from within the sub-region, to transfer their back office jobs to BPOs in Ghana." At the same time, he also revealed that his department is working on establishing special academies geared towards training nationals to be ready to deal with the anticipated upturn in sales outsourcing demand. Earlier this month, Ghana's finance minister reported that the country has been able to withstand the global economic downturn due largely to strong cocoa and gold export levels.
