Graduate jobseekers too focused on London

People looking for graduate jobs in London are missing out on opportunities in the rest of the country's regions, as a new study shows that 9 out of 10 UK graduates look to the capital for employment.

According to a story on HR Magazine, research by a graduate recruitment company has shown that 91% of graduates focus their job search on London.

Whilst this might seem the best location for anyone seeking a high paying entry-level financial or sales job, this narrow focus is meaning people are missing out on what the rest of the country has to offer.

Amazingly, only one in 10 graduates are seeking employment in the North West, only 7% are searching for graduate jobs in Wales and a minimal 4% are considering employment in Northern Ireland. The only region outside of London that had any significant interest was the South East itself, with 31% of those surveyed saying that their job search included the area.

Taken together, these figures reveal that most graduates are almost exclusively focused on London. This is despite the same survey showing that 53% of graduates claim to be ready and willing to move to anywhere in the country for a position.

Despite the concentration of money in the nation's capital, there are many regional opportunities on offer for graduate recruitment. Many smaller businesses have taken on graduates in sales jobs and other middle management roles since the economic downturn began, boosting their workforce and offering graduates the chance to get on the job sales training and valuable experience.
