Graduate job hunters 'should not be ignored'

Graduate job hunters 'should not be ignored' An industry figure has claimed that the last thing that should happen is for young people such as graduates looking for a job to lose out because of the recession.

Will Cookson, head of skills at Working Links, made the comments following the government's announcement that its Backing Young Britain campaign would involve training schemes and apprenticeships at firms such as Morissons and Microsoft.

Mr Cookson believes that a combination of government, corporate and university support is vital in helping people build up the skills required to secure a graduate job.

He said: "I think that we all have to be positive about these schemes. From the individuals that we help into work we know that work is not just about the financial benefits; it also helps to build confidence and self esteem as well helping people to develop their skills further."

The Confederation of British Industry recently said that those struggling to find a graduate job at the moment could look towards a paid apprenticeship to gain experience, but too few know about available schemes.
