The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has called for more training so that those looking for graduate construction jobs can help the industry meet its shortfall in skills. In a survey by the membership body, 77 per cent of respondents said they had experienced a shortage of skills, despite the recession and lack of demand, while 76 per cent agreed that there should mandatory graduate apprenticeships on public projects. According to Michael Brown, deputy chief executive of CIOB, the construction industry has been "notoriously bad" at recruiting graduates which may lead to an even greater skills shortage later on. He said: "There is no denying the importance of graduate and apprentice recruitment as these employees represent the future of the industry." John Simpson, an expert writing in the Belfast Telegraph recently said that too many graduates in Northern Ireland lack skills in construction, leading to a gap between the country's economic performance and that of the UK.
