Many accountancy graduates are considering employment options outside of the City to protect from the economic downturn, it has emerged. Gordon Chesterman, the head of Cambridge University's careers service, noted that graduates with accountancy degrees are considering positions which pose less risk than those in the banking and the financial sector. As a result of the trend, some City firms are finding it more difficult to secure the top talent for their vacancies. "[The students] read headlines in the press about 120,000 white-collar jobs going in the finance sector and thought, 'I've got my suspicions'," explained Mr Chesterman. Recent reports have noted that there has been an increased demand for accountants in areas such as insolvency. Meanwhile, IMR Accountancy recently noted that small to medium-sized businesses in the sector are weathering the economic slowdown.
