Graduates look for skills acquisition in jobs, says KPMG

Graduates look for skills acquisition in jobs, says KPMG A new survey by big four professional services firm KPMG has said that those looking for graduate jobs in the current economic climate are primarily concerned with the skills a position may offer them.

The report showed that university leavers are taking a more long-term view to employment during the recession, with 43 per cent looking for graduate jobs which will provide them with future skills.

Less than 30 per cent are concerned with job security, while 11 per cent are choosing employers based on salary, showing graduates' desires for jobs with long-term value.

Ruth Elwood, head of recruitment at KPMG, said: "Clearly the recession is making them think about their long-term prospects, not just their first job. Employers need to take account of this - the economic downturn could have caused a long-lasting shift in student attitudes."

Employers have also been reminded of the importance of making sure new recruits are settled in to their graduate jobs by the human resources manager for Enterprise Rent-a-Car, according to People Management.
