Those leaving university this summer to find a graduate job will have to respond to increased competition if they are to stand a chance at finding employment, according to one expert. Barbara Phillips-Kerr, assistant director for the Careers Service at Newcastle University, told bdaily.com that applicants for graduate jobs must try harder to stand out from the crowd. She added that they should exploit all their experiences, "paid and unpaid", in order to demonstrate that they have the skills for whichever graduate job they are applying for. John Charlton, graduate recruitment partner at the Newcastle branch of Deloitte, backed up Ms Phillips-Kerr's statement, advising employers: "We must help graduates avoid the 'career paralysis' trap which is often triggered when fear sets in and inaction takes over." Jo Lennon, from the Tyne and Wear Enterprise Trust, recently told the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette that those looking for graduate jobs this summer will need to show employers that they are determined.
