Legal firms looking for new recruits are more likely to look towards graduates with law degrees rather than those who take one-year graduate diplomas in law, according to one expert. Writing in the Independent, Edward Fennell cited the recent decision by law firm Slaughter and May to cease all recruitment of non-graduate applicants to employ those looking for graduate law jobs who hold university degrees. He said that, while some legal firms recruit even numbers of non-graduates and graduates, on average the ratio lies at 60:40 in favour of graduate law job seekers who have been through a three-year university course. Mr Fennell wrote in the newspaper: "Some recruiters say privately that they prefer the law applicants because they have shown long-term commitment to the profession." A recent report by Warwick University showed that those with good degrees in law could expect to receive the highest salaries of all university leavers in their graduate law jobs.
