Law firms paying graduates to defer work

Law firms paying graduates to defer work Several top City law firms are offering graduates thousands of pounds not to work due to the credit crunch.

University leavers who agree to defer their start date could be compensated with up to £10,000 from some companies.

Norton Rose is offering the cash incentive to its 55 new recruits, who will then go on to receive a £35,700 starting salary.

London firm Penningtons is also taking part, offering trainees £5,000 to hold off on their entry into the workplace.

Spokeswoman Caroline Ainsworth said: "As a result of the economic situation, we have asked trainees to consider postponing their contracts."

Industry expert Matthew Rhodes added: "These payments are not just about saving money now. They are about making sure there is enough quality work around to be able to keep trainees on when they qualify and put them to work."

Specialist recruitment consultancy Hays recently claimed that that numerous companies are still seeking in-house lawyers.
