Manufacturing firms are on the lookout for graduates who are reconsidering employment opportunities in light of the current jobs market. James Robson, business development and finance director of Hartlepool-based Exwold Technology, notes that companies can benefit from the availability of university leavers who are steering clear of the financial sector. "More people will think of manufacturing as a viable career choice. Some people will think: 'I don't want to be a lawyer or accountant'." He added that graduates from outside the Teeside area could be attracted to the region, given its reputation for quality manufacturing. "It's not a sunset industry – it's here to stay. I wouldn't put it past people to get their degrees and move to Teesside," he remarked. Meanwhile, engineering recruitment website Gradcracker recently noted that a high proportion of firms in the sector are still actively recruiting graduates and placement students, despite the challenging economic climate.
