Local authorities should provide apprenticeships and entry initiatives, a council leader has recommended. Stephen Houghton, of Metropolitan Borough Council, has called for 50,000 apprenticeship places and 75,000 "taster schemes" which will provide valuable experience to those looking for work. Mr Houghton has received ministerial backing for the programmes, which he says should be provided by local authorities by 2012. Barnsley government minister John Healey has allocated £3 million to help get the proposals underway, while a national forum is to be set up to ensure that the recommendations are fully implemented. Mr Houghton said: "Councils must urgently make an assessment of their local situation and plan how to help get people the right training and make sure they have as many opportunities as possible to get jobs quickly." It was recently reported that the Recruitment and Employment Confederation is offering assistance to companies looking to take on more staff during the downturn.
