'New economy' requires improved sales training A sales training expert has said that staff development courses should take a different perspective because of the way the recession has affected the economy.

Tom Goetschius, who runs a Florida-based consultancy, said that the "paradigm shift" caused by the recession means that sales training needs to impart advice about addressing customers' needs differently.

The specialist claimed that we now have a "new economy" and that customers will no longer be encouraged to purchase through pushy sales techniques and will demand to know about the product before any transactions are made.

He explained: "It's not business as usual anymore. We have undergone a transformational shift in consumer attitude and behaviour. Today's consumers are more savvy and aware - thriftier, more cautious and less trusting."
