Accountancy recruiters who provide employees to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are in a better position to resist the downturn than their larger counterparts, it has been suggested. David Jervis, managing director of Farnham-based recruiter IMR Accountancy, notes that the small to medium accountancy businesses are not as badly hit as their duty tends to be compliance work for SMEs. Speaking to Recruiter, he said SMEs need to have their accounts taken care of "whether its boom or bust". Lorraine Twist, managing consultant public practice division of ECHM, agreed, pointing out that SMEs are making use of the current financial climate. "Reduced demand from the large accountancy firms and the wider pool of talent now available in the market means smaller firms are using this as an opportunity to attract high calibre individuals," she said. Louise Campbell, managing director for Ireland at Robert Walters, recently noted that demand for accountants is still being pushed up by the continuing economic downturn.
