PR firms 'not planning staff cuts'

PR firms 'not planning staff cuts' A high proportion of PR companies do not intend to implement staff cuts, according to a new study.

Recent research conducted by search and selection firm VMA indicated that nearly three-quarters of companies will not reduce their headcount this year.

Furthermore, some 25 per cent of communications directors say they will increase staff numbers, which could be welcome news for graduates considering a career in the sector.

Julia Meighan, chief executive at VMA, noted that many companies during the last recession cut their staffing levels as a "knee-jerk reaction".

"In fact, VMA Search's recent State of the Market survey of directors of communications and PR agency directors and MDs in association with ComRes, indicates that businesses do recognise the importance of PR and communications and, as a result, are not expecting to downsize in 2009," she explained.

Carl Gilleard of the Association of Graduate Recruiters recently claimed that the graduate recruitment industry is proving resilient to the effects of the economic downturn.
