Graduate internships should be paid, says Worcester University

Graduate internships should be paid, says Worcester University A university in the West Midlands which lost out on convincing the government to supply paid internships to graduates who could not secure jobs this year has set up its own scheme.

Worcester University is currently offering a graduate internship allowing university leavers to work four days at a local business and a fifth day undertaking postgraduate training in business management, the Independent reports.

Those who take up the scheme will be paid a bursary of £200 a month, which is supplied by the government and Higher Education Funding Council for England's Economic Challenge Investment Fund.

David Green, vice-chancellor of the university, told the newspaper: "This [funding] will enable them to keep body and soul together, not a lot more than that, but it will mean they won't get further into debt."

Tom Hadley, director of external relations at the Recruitment & Employment Confederation, recently said that more university leavers are taking advantage of the benefits which graduate internships have to offer.
