Post-graduates are to be brought into primary schools in a bid to get children interested in science. Graham Donaldson, HMIE senior chief inspector, recently expressed concern that many pupils in Scotland were falling behind in such subjects. Anne Glover, the government's chief scientific adviser, pointed out that children often regard teachers as parental figures, whereas graduates are more readily associated with a sibling or friend. Fiona Hyslop, the education secretary, said making use of post-graduates could be a successful strategy to stimulate an interest in science subjects. "Our young people must understand the importance of science in the 21st century," she said. "I expect as many schools as possible, particularly primary schools, to be implementing the science outcomes (of the Curriculum for Excellence) from 2009." The Antal International's Global Snapshot survey for the winter of 2008/09 recently indicated that recruitment in Scotland has remained healthy despite the current economic situation.
