Retailers 'promoting apprenticeships' More than 80 major retailers have congregated at to promote the importance of apprenticeships and graduate jobs.

The Skillsmart Retail Apprenticeship event took place at London's Excel Centre during National Apprenticeship Week last month in order to emphasise the value of investing in new talent.

Commenting on the issue, Skillsmart Retail's employer engagement director Simon Blower said: "The very strongest brands we see are the organisations that are investing now in people and their brand so they can really take advantage of the economic upturn when it comes."

Major supermarket chain Tesco noted that trainees who sign up for apprenticeships with the company receive a range of "real-life" skills which are highly- beneficial to businesses.

The Association of Graduate Recruiters recently urged companies not to cut back on their graduate schemes in an attempt economise during the economic downturn.

According to the group, businesses should bear in mind the long-term benefits of investing in university leavers.
