Sales training is 'not a given'

Sales training is 'not a given' Expert marketing skills among staff are not something to be taken for granted, according to one sales training expert.

Sue Barrett, recognised as a leader of sales training in her native Australia, believes that directors need to take the initiative to provide their employees with the development they need for the industry.

The courses need to be rigorous – sales training without subsequent coaching will result in staff forgetting vital skills and feedback is important to make sure marketers know how they are improving, Ms Barrett said.

She told Smart Company: "Despite popular opinion, the sales profession is very skilful, with many technical and interpersonal skills that need to be continuously honed and developed."

Boomology! author Trent Leyshan recently told the news provider that salespeople should seem credible when talking about their product and that this is only done with a genuine interest in the item being sold.
