Retail giant Tesco is to pump its largest ever investment into the sales training of its store-front staff, it has been revealed. Despite the recession, the supermarket has boosted the funds going into the sales training of its employees by 23 per cent on last year's figures through its Tesco Academy initiative. Some £3 million will be spent on staff development in the next 12 months, mainly on store managers, to improve the sales techniques of its workers in preparation of the economic upturn. Peta Hay, director of the Tesco Academy, said: "We believe it is more important than ever to invest in our people as Tesco continues to expand both geographically and into new business sectors. "Our investment in leadership development represents the largest investment of its kind in the retail sector," he added. BusinessWeek journalist Jeremy Quittner recently said that retail firms should be looking to use 'consultative' sales training in order to allow their staff to gain the skills to provide excellent customer service.
