Unemployed graduates 'priority for pre-Budget report'

Unemployed graduates 'priority for pre-Budget report' Several business groups have called upon chancellor Alistair Darling to announce plans to improve the current situation regarding graduate jobs in his upcoming pre-Budget report.

Taking place next Wednesday (December 9th), the expected disclosure of cuts to the budget should not affect graduate job hunters currently without employment, according to the Confederation of British Industry and EEF, the UK manufacturers' organisation.

Speaking to Personnel Today, the Work Foundation concurred, requesting guaranteed graduate jobs or "meaningful work-related activity", as set out in the Job Guarantee from April's Budget.

David Coats, associate director of the group, told the news provider: "Revising the Job Guarantee will improve the effectiveness of the programme, focus resources on the young people most in need of support, and encourage employers to become active partners in the initiative."

The Daily Telegraph recently urged construction graduates to try other sectors if they are to avoid unemployment as the industry has been the worst-hit by the recession.
