University leavers in the West Midlands will have the chance to boost their gradute job prospects by taking up an internship with a local firm. The scheme, organised by Keele University, will see successful applicants from the West Midlands, Staffordshire and Shropshire gain work experience for between four weeks and six months in a variety of different fields. Graduate job hunters who left higher education last summer can participate in the initiative along with those who gained their degree up to three years ago but are having trouble finding employment in the current economic climate. According to the Coventry Telegraph, the internships offer a maximum of 30 hours work a week with opportunities to take Jobseekers Allowance and travel expenses if necessary. The government should invest £3 million into graduate internships at local firms as well as increase the national minimum wage for apprentices to £123 a week, the Federation of Small Businesses recently said.
